![]() Thats the sad case when it comes to Toronto rapper and singer Nav, who played a tedious show at the Rave in Milwaukee Friday even though it actually only lasted 48 minutes. His sophomore album Bad Habits is one of the years biggest releases, debuting at No. Billboard 200 in March. But it also represents what could become a new subgenre of hip-hop: algorithm rap. Every beat is a generically bland take on trap, but with enough bass to move a crowd and competent enough to fit in on a wide spectrum of Spotify rap and pop playlists. The lyrics, largely tired takes on success and the pitfalls of fame, are void of creativity or character, but theres also no barrier of entry whatsoever. Found out my penthouse is on the top floor, Nav rapped during Snap Friday. I dont like taking chances, Nav said Friday on Taking Chances. But just to emphasize an already blatant point, Nav came up with this atrocious analogy: I like (expletive) hoes I already know. Every song Friday was delivered with a spineless flow that makes it easy to comprehend and sing along to, which is what Navs fans did at the Rave. But as a performer, Nav had even less personality than his soulless songs. His stage moves consisted of little more than pacing, bunny hops and adjusting his hoodie while smugly staring out from behind his shades. But no one seemed to pay much attention to what was happening on stage anyway. The bros and girls were there to rage with each other to the simple beats and belt out lines like Attention I feel when Im surrounded by these hoes and,Remember feeling broke as (expletive)Now Im pulling up in Rover trucks. Nav may have debuted an album at No. He may have 3 billion global streams. He may have the endorsement of an actual star and trendsetter in the Weeknd, who signed him to his label XO Records. But in Milwaukee Friday, Nav was practically invisible at his own show. THE TAKEAWAYS Navs DJ Friday tried to get the crowd hyped up for an encore before abruptly pulling the plug. There appeared to be some security issues with a fan in the pit, so that could be the reason. Or maybe Nav wanted to get back to watching the Toronto Raptors in game four of the NBA Finals. Theres nothing novel about Nav, except for this: he was the first Punjabi rapper to have a No. One of Fridays biggest crowdpleasers, early hit Up, has a line alluding to the Milwaukee Bucks in the chorus: All my shooters ballin playing for the bucks. The song also features some of Navs dumbest lyrics to date, about having relations with a woman outside a Toys R Us. Contact Piet at (414) 223-5162 or plevyjournalsentinel.com.
